AI DRONES in Ukraine - Battlefield Examples

While many countries are developing this technology, its first routine combat use has been pioneered by Ukraine in the ongoing conflict with Russia.

  • Electronic Warfare (EW) Countermeasures: Ukrainian forces have reportedly used drone swarms to counter Russia's extensive electronic warfare capabilities. Because the drones communicate peer-to-peer and can navigate without GPS, they are less susceptible to jamming.

  • Force Multiplier: A single human operator can command a group of drones to perform a coordinated attack on a target, allowing a small number of personnel to have a disproportionately large impact. Drones can be sent on missions that would be too dangerous for humans, such as suppressing an assault or scouting enemy positions.

  • Overwhelming Defenses: A swarm's sheer numbers and coordinated movements can be used to overwhelm enemy air defenses. Even if some drones are shot down, the rest of the swarm can continue the mission, ensuring the objective is met.

  • Target Identification and Prioritization: In a battlefield scenario, an operator can define a "kill box" on a map. The drones, using their AI and machine vision, can then autonomously identify, classify, and select targets within that area, prioritizing based on pre-defined rules, while still allowing for human-in-the-loop decisions for critical engagements.
